Last Wednesday night after a hard day at work we broke up the work week with a little date night in downtown Durham. We had tickets to see The Jayhawks band at the Carolina Theatre and needed to grab a quick dinner bite before the show. We stumbled upon Scratch Bakery and decided to give it a shot.
Phoebe Lawless is the baker behind Scratch, a Durham start-up that is getting widespread attention (see recent mention and recipe in Bon Appetit magazine). She creates some amazing pies, pastries, and treats. Lawless opened her bakery on a quiet, leafy side street in downtown Durham. It’s an immensely charming space, with a clean, modern feel. The glass store-front, high ceilings, and exposed brick walls give an airy, casual ambience. The tables are heavily lacquered turquoise wood, the floor is a nice smooth tile, and the remaining walls are brightly colored without being overbearing. A grouping of outdoor tables lends a nice European café feel and makes you want to linger.
Wednesday nights at Scratch are BYOB and pizza night. Large groups of locals filled the restaurant with 6 packs of yummy NC beers. We didn't get the BYOB memo until after we arrived, bummer, so we kept it PG with some ginger sodas.
We ordered two of the best pizza's we have ever eaten then rolled our full tummies over to the Carolina Theatre to catch the show.
The Carolina Theatre was build in 1926 and recently went thru a multimillion dollar restoration. Sadly for downtown the Carolina Theatre remains as the last of thirteen original theaters in the city.
You can't tell from my horrible camera phone picture but we were lucky enough to be in the 4th row for our date night. We were treated to the beautiful and talented Tift Merritt for our opening act.
The Jayhawks then came out and rocked the house for the rest of the night. Even though were a little tired the next day at work from getting home after our curfew date night was a success.
Check out the video above from an old David Letterman appearance if you have time. Since it's a cold rainy day in Durham today I thought this song was the perfect choice.
Any readers have a date night scheduled this weeknd?
